Climate change, COP28: Italy-Emirati agreement to guarantee success

(Finance) – Strengthen collaboration between the two countries to ensure the success of cop28 on climate change, which will be held from 30 November to 12 December in the United Arab Emirates. This is the goal of the declaration of intent signed today by Italy and the United Arab Emirates.

“A text – comments the Minister of the Environment and Energy Security Gilberto Pichetto – which highlights the many possible connections between countries in the important hub represented by the next Conference of the Parties”. The agreement recognizes the importance of global action to face the challenge of climate change and it is considered “urgent to accelerate efforts to achieve the long-term goals of the Paris Agreement, including the goal of net-zero emissions by 2050”.

Highlighted in the joint deed, which for Italy bears the signature of Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, there is the importance of the first “Global Stocktake” to monitor progress in reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the commitment to limit global temperature increase to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels, climate finance and the need to direct energy systems towards renewable sources.

Both countries also recognized the importance of working together to enhance global resilience and support adaptation. In particular, the agreement underlines the importance of finding solutions for food and water security, health and the protection of natural ecosystems. In view of COP28, the two countries will continue to commit to new ways of financing, as the fund to assist particularly vulnerable developing countries in the loss and damage critical to the collective goal of increasing climate finance and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals. Finally, the declaration recognizes and applauds the efforts of young people around the world in tackling the climate crisis and reiterates the will to strengthen their involvement in COP28, based on the results achieved by the initiative Youth4Climate.
