Claude Allegre former Minister of National Education is dead –

The former Minister of National Education, Claude Allègre, died this Saturday January 4 in Paris at the age of 87, his son announced to AFP. This trained geochemist, known for his outspokenness, occupied rue de Grenelle from 1997 to 2000, when Lionel Jospin, one of his close friends, was Prime Minister. Barely a few weeks in this position when his declarations stood out, notably the one promising to “slim down the mammoth” of National Education – which will continue.

A long-time member of the Socialist Party, before joining Nicolas Sarkozy in 2007, Claude Allègre, an internationally recognized scientist who played a major role at the Globe Physics Institute in Paris, was also noted, more recently, for very controversial positions on climate change.
