In 1996, K-Rauta opened its first department store in Sweden. In August 2023, it was announced that the retail chain will close all its department stores in Sweden.

K-Rauta closes in Sweden – after 28 years
Since then, 14 department stores have been closed down completely or rebuilt.
On December 10, the Swedish website for K-Rauta will be shut down. On December 20, they close the last two department stores in Sweden, which are located in Karlstad and Mölndal.
One of the underlying reasons is that K-Rauta has had some profitability problems, something like Market Be the first to write about.
After 2022, Kesko AB, which owns K-Rauta, had a profit after financial net of – SEK 78,759,000. After 2023, the same figure was – SEK 185,001,000, according to figures from All companies.

Now Kesko wants to invest in the sister brand K-Bygg instead.

In an interview with News24 says Marika Tornbergcommunications manager at Kesko Sweden, that there are a total of seven department stores that have been converted from K-Rauta to K-Bygg in Sweden.
– We have now converted the seven K-Rauta department stores according to plan, to K-Bygg. Only Karlstad and Mölndal remain and they will be closed on December 20, says Tornberg.

In connection with the announcement that K-Rauta is closing down, Kesko Sweden’s CEO wrote Endre Espeseth the following in a press release:
“Everyone is welcome to shop at K-Bygg, even though we are first and foremost the obvious first choice for professional builders”.
