The unrest broke out on Saturday in Foro Baranga, near the border with Chad, according to the UN agency Ocha. A night curfew was introduced and a state of emergency has been declared for one month.
The latest unrest is a reminder of the dire situation in Darfur province after civil war broke out in 2003, backed by Sudan’s then-dictator Omar al-Bashir and the dreaded Janjawid militia. About 300,000 people were killed in the war.
Omar al-Bashir, who was overthrown in 2019, is imprisoned in Sudan’s capital Khartoum and is wanted by the International Criminal Court for genocide.
