The Chatham-Kent Public Library is encouraging readers across the municipality to join in on its seventh-annual community-wide book club.
CK Reads is an initiative from the library which allows anyone to participate by reading the same book. This year, the library has chosen a novel called The Daughter of Doctor Moreau by Silvia Moreno-Garcia.
“Through discussions and programs, CK Reads hopes to bring the community closer together through a shared love of reading,” a news release from the library said.
The 2023 CK Reads title is a reimagining of The Island of Doctor Moreau set against the backdrop of 19th century Mexico.
“The story is both a dazzling historical novel and a daring science fiction journey and was a New York Times Editor’s Choice recommended read,” the release said.
Moreno-Garcia was born in Mexico City and now lives in Vancouver. Her other work, which has earned her accolades, includes Gods of Jane and Shadow, Mexican Gothic and Velvet Was the Night.
Those interested in participating can reserve a copy of Moreno-Garcia’s 2022 novel by calling or visiting a local library, or by searching for “Daughter of Doctor Moreau” at search,ckpl.ca.
CK Reads will conclude with virtual author visit in early May.
