Chatham-Kent Fire & Rescue will be using a $25,000 grant to rebuild its central command unit.
The grant comes from Hydro One’s Energizing Life Community Fund, which has donated to 25 charitable organizations, Indigenous communities and municipalities this year.
The fire department will rebuild the command unit by repurposing an existing fire truck, according to a news release.
A command unit is a vehicle designed to work as a “forward command and control point,” the release said. They are sent to the scenes of larger scale or prolonged incidents where additional command support is required.
These units also provide protection from the elements for firefighters, officers and other emergency responders and can provide decontamination as part of the department’s cancer prevention strategy.
“All of our fire trucks are engaged in protecting the community. The command unit is the only truck engaged to protect our firefighters and partners,” Fire Chief Chris Case said in the release. “The new incident command unit will be used across CK (to) support all of our 19 fire stations.”
