City won the Super Cup after penalty drama

It is the first time Manchester City has won the Super Cup, the final between the winner of the Champions League and the Europa League.

After 1–1 at full time, the final went to a penalty shoot-out where the first nine penalties went on target.

When Nemanja Gudelj fired Sevilla’s fifth penalty onto the crossbar, the title was at hand for last season’s treble winners.

Walker match winner

Manchester City had started the new season by losing the Community Shield at Wembley to Arsenal on penalties.

Now it was revenge and Kyle Walker, who scored City’s fifth penalty, became the match winner.

Manchester City won their first ever Champions League title in May while Sevilla won the Europa League for the seventh time in 17 years.

City came into play the day after it was announced that star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has suffered a serious injury and is likely to be out for the rest of the year.

Manchester City dominated possession and created some chances, but Sevilla were sharp in their counterattacks.

So did the lead goal when top scorer Youssef En-Nesyri powerfully headed in the 1-0 goal from Marcos Acuna’s perfect pass in the 25th minute.

It was Sevilla’s first attack of the match.

En-Nesyri had a great opportunity on a counter attack at the beginning of the second half, but City goalkeeper Ederson saved.

However, Manchester City’s grip tightened and the equalizer in the 63rd minute also came on the header through Cole Palmer after Rodri’s precise cross.

Sevilla goalkeeper Yassine Bounou – who is rumored to be on his way to Saudi al-Hilal – was without a chance.

Bounou then had no luck in the penalty shootout – and Manchester City could celebrate in Athens.
