City says security camera not meant to discourage peaceful protest

A public notice issued by the city says a high-tech security camera system being moved around Brantford isn’t intended to discourage peaceful protest.

The new Gridless Sentry Verkada Security Camera Trailer, a system that has up to six cameras and is cloud-connected and run by artificial intelligence. could be seen at the gateway to the former Arrowdale golf course on Thursday.

A protest is planned at the former golf course site on Sunday.

“The deployment of the security CCTV trailer system is in no way intended to discourage peaceful and lawful protest and is intended solely to protect city-owned properties from unlawful activities,” said the notice.

It said the cameras’ angles and views are customized to each site and “privacy masks” are applied to areas that extend beyond the city’s property, blocking them in recorded or live video feeds.

Further, the notice says use of the security system complies with the city’s bylaw and access to video is exclusively restricted to authorized staff and the city’s corporate security team.
