City offering free series on elder abuse awareness prevention

The City of Brantford is offering a free information series on elder abuse awareness and prevention.

The city, in partnership with Victim Services Brant and Elder Abuse Prevention Ontario, is hosting the Let’s Stay Informed series to provide information about elder abuse and increase access to resources and support.

“It’s important that we continue to support older adults in Brantford by actively working to spread awareness about elder abuse,” said Penny McVicar of Victim Services Brant.

The first session, Protecting Yourself and Your Loved Ones Against Financial Abuse, will be held on Tuesday, Dec. 6 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am at Woodman Park Community Centre.

Elder Abuse Service Provider Protocol Training will be held virtually, through Zoom, on Thursday, Dec. 15 from 9:30 am to 10:30 am This session is only available to those who provide services to local seniors.

Understanding Ones Rights as a Senior to Protect and Prevent Against Ageism will be held virtually on Thursday, Jan. 12 from 11 am to noon.

The final session, Understanding Financial Abuse and Power of Attorney Through Story Telling, will be posted on YouTube and the city’s Preventing Elder Abuse webpage on Thursday, Feb. 15. This session will be a pre-recorded webinar available at Brantford.ca/healthyliving. Registration isn’t required.
