City launching Green Bin program

Delivery of green bins and kitchen catchers starts Wednesday (Sept. 13) as the city launches its new Green Bin program.

Plans call for residents to have their green bins by Oct. 20 and information about acceptable and unacceptable items will be included in the delivery.

Green bin organic waste collection is scheduled to start Nov. 1 and takes place on the same day as regular garbage and recycling collection, city officials said in a statement released Monday.

“The Green Bin program is a testament to our commitment to environmental stewardship,” Mayor Kevin Davis said in a statement. “We believe that small individual actions, when multiplied across our community, can have a tremendous impact on our environment.

“By introducing this program, we are taking a significant step towards a greener and more sustainable future for Brantford.”

About 35,000 homes in Brantford are expected to be part of the program, which will divert organic waste from the city’s Mohawk Street landfill. The organic waste will be used to create a nutrient-rich compost and, at the same time, reduce the amount of waste accumulating at the landfill.

City officials say the program will help decrease greenhouse gas emissions and help Brantford reach its goal of zero waste and 70 per cent diversion by 2050.

Meanwhile, Green Bin open houses have been organized throughout September to help residents learn more about the program.

Following is a list of the times, dates and locations of the open houses: Ward 1 – Thursday, September 14, drop-in from 6 pm to 8 pm Bell Homestead NHS, 94 Tutela Heights Road; Ward 2 – Tuesday, September 19, drop-in from 6 pm to 8 pm, TB Costain-SC Johnson Community Center, 16 Morrell Street; Ward 3 – Thursday, September 28, drop-in from 6 pm to 8 pm, Wayne Gretzky Sports Center – Tournament Room, 254 North Park Street; Ward 4 – Wednesday, September 27, drop-in from 6 pm to 8 pm, Woodman Community Center, 491 Gray Street; Ward 5 – Thursday, September 21, drop-in from 6 pm to 8 pm, Doug Snooks Eagle Place Community Center, 333 Erie Avenue.
