The writer and debater Cissi Wallin is appealing the Court of Appeal verdict, where she was convicted of gross defamation against the journalist Fredrik Virtanen, to the Supreme Court.
According to the appeal, she first wants to be acquitted, and secondly that the court “imposes a less intrusive penalty”.
During the autumn of 2017, Cissi Wallin accused Virtanen on social media of having drugged and raped her in 2006. The incident had previously been investigated by the police, but the case was dropped. Virtanen has always denied the accusations and reported Cissi Wallin for defamation.
Wallin has been convicted in both the district court and the court of appeal. The penalty was a suspended sentence and daily fines.
In order for a case to be taken up in the Supreme Court, leave to appeal is required, which very few appealed cases receive. As a rule, leave to appeal is only granted if the case can provide guidance in similar cases.
