The plastic bag tax is abolished, the tax on snus is reduced, but the tax on cigarettes is raised for the year 2024. In a legislative decision from the Government Office, it can be read that the Riksdag originally intended to raise the tobacco tax in 2023 and 2024. Due to inflation, the decision has changed.
Tax increase on tobacco – 9 percent
The tax on most tobacco products will be increased by 9 percent in 2024. But the tax rate is calculated differently depending on which product applies.
An exception is made for tobacco snuff, as these are considered to pose a minor health hazard. It is therefore cigarettes and smoking tobacco that will be affected by the tax increase with the aim of getting more people to stop smoking. This is because of the health risk.
A pack of cigarettes will be SEK 4 more expensive in 2024. The price will apply from January 1, 2024.
