Christopher Nolan’s Batman trilogy remains one of the most popular and best superhero films ever. It’s hard to believe that the director himself had huge doubts about the films and almost threw in the towel after Batman Begins.
As his brother Jonathan Nolan (Fallout) revealed to host Dax Shepard in the Armchair Expert podcast, it took a huge amount of persuasion on his part to get the later Oppenheimer director to accept it The Dark Knight to move.
Superhero scruples: Christopher Nolan originally didn’t want to do The Dark Knight
Jonathan Nolan explained in an interview that it was an incredible feeling for him to be on the set of Batman Begins after receiving his first Batman comic from his brother for his birthday ten years earlier. Therefore, he couldn’t understand why Nolan was hesitant about making another film in the series at the time. As Jonathan Nolan revealed, his brother didn’t want to be pigeonholed and instead went straight to his next project Prestige – The Masters of Magic: “He didn’t want to be a superhero movie director.“
However, Jonathan Nolan saw potential in the series and tried to persuade his brother to make a second Batman film:
We put an hour into it telling the story of how it came about and that’s great, but I asked myself: What else can we do with it? Can we put the same characters in a slightly different genre? Can we from an adventure film to a crime film Go to a mafia movie and bring that vibe into it?

Jonathan convinced Christopher Nolan to make The Dark Knight
Finally, Jonathan sat down with Christopher Nolan and producer Charles Roven and applied pressure again:
I meant, ‘Dude, don’t be a coward. Let us do this!’ […] And I knew when the script was finished, ‘This is going to be great. That is exciting. We have to make this movie.’ And ultimately has [Christopher Nolan] then agreed. He was able to avoid being put in that category.
The script for The Dark Knight was written in collaboration between Christopher Nolan, David S. Goyer and Jonathan Nolan. The superhero hit is now considered one of the director’s best films and is shared by the Moviepilot community 8.3/10 points the highest rating of Nolan films with his sci-fi hit Interstellar. Heath Ledger was posthumously honored with the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for his performance as the Joker in The Dark Knight.
