In an interview with Total Film, Nolan explained that they used practical effects to recreate the devastation of the first atomic bomb.
“I find it a huge challenge to recreate the Trinity test without using computer graphics. Andrew Jackson – my visual effects consultant, from representing quantum dynamics and quantum physics to the Trinity test itself, to recreating Los Alamos in extreme weather conditions with my team on a mesa in New Mexico. “He was looking at how we could practically make many of the visual elements of the movie as much as possible. There were a lot of things that were needed for the movie, there were huge practical challenges.” Nolan said that it was very difficult for them to physically reproduce this explosion effect.
“With the breadth of Oppenheimer’s story, it’s one of the most challenging projects I’ve ever undertaken. There were big, logistical challenges, big practical challenges. But I have an amazing team and they really did their best. It’s going to take a while before we finish. But as we watch the results come in and the movie comes together, I’m very excited about what my team has accomplished.” With his words, he raised expectations a little.
