Christmas markets: reinforced sanitary pass control

Christmas markets reinforced sanitary pass control

Christmas markets are subject to the health pass, but health rules are not always applied by visitors, as was the case in the Strasbourg market. The government has announced the strengthening of controls.

[Mise à jour du 6 décembre à 20h10]. Next to a Defense Council organized on December 6, Olivier Véran and Jean Castex announced new measures to limit the risk of contamination in France. As it concerns Christmas markets, the government wants to strengthen the rules, especially in the catering areas. The health pass, which is already compulsory to access the chalets, will have to be better controlled, announced the Prime Minister.

What health protocol for Christmas markets?

To access the traditional Christmas markets, the health pass will be compulsory. This was announced by the Minister of Health Olivier Véran this Thursday, November 25 at a press conference. “For Christmas markets, their access will be subject to the health pass “ did he declare. Also, for Christmas markets, as for flea markets, the prefects may decide to return the wearing a mask is compulsory. In addition, wearing a mask has become compulsory again, since November 26, everywhere indoors, “in places covered by the health pass”.

But these rules are not always respected, as the Prefect of Bas-Rhin regrets concerning Strasbourg Christmas Market. “I myself observed that a certain number of rules fixed (…) within the framework of the sanitary protocol had not been understood “, said Josiane Chevalier at a press conference. The prefect notably mentioned visitors who did not comply with the obligation to wear a mask in the market and also regrets that the dedicated food zones (Zad) where the health pass is compulsory, are shunned by the public. She then announced the creation of additional Zads and advocated strengthening the display of the obligation to wear a mask. Other municipalities are also mobilizing to verify proper compliance with the sanitary rules in force at Christmas markets. Thus, 40 members of the security forces carried out this Sunday, November 28, with multiple checks in and around the Colmar Christmas market (Haut-Rhin) at the request of the Haut-Rhin prefecture. In particular, they checked the validity of visitors’ health passes and recalled the good practice of barrier gestures according to Alsace.

It should be remembered that certain European cities impose more restrictions in the face of an epidemic resumption, such as in Germany where the city of Munich has decided to cancel its Christmas markets, which attract more than two million visitors each year. “This is bitter news (…) but the dramatic situation in our hospitals and the exponential growth in the number of infections leave me no other choice.“said Mayor Dieter Reiter in a statement on November 16. For now, the Christmas markets in France are maintained, although they could not be organized last year due to the sanitary situation.
