In the Middle Ages, Christmas had a slightly different purpose than today.

– What was actually celebrated was the new year, says associate professor Bo Eriksson at Stockholm University.

In the 12th century and around 100 years later, Christmas was something that was celebrated inside – in the church.

– Christmas was not really a Christian holiday at the time, says Bo Eriksson.

Above all, the population wanted to pass this dark time by lighting candles, celebrating and partying.
