Star Trek did what all reboots dream of. It won over the long-time fans of its franchise. But after the sequels Star Trek Into Darkness and Star Trek Beyond, the reboot seems to have run out of steam. The fans have been waiting for Star Trek 4 since 2016. Speaking to Esquire, Pine said:

After [Star Trek 3] didn’t bring in the expected billion and [Co-Star] Anton Yelchin died it feels kind of cursed. On Star Trek, the actors are usually the last to know. […] It is frustrating [und] doesn’t exactly create the strongest sense of community.

He has not yet read a finished script for part 4, I find the story as convincing as that of the first reboot part, he explained. So the next Star Trek film must have made some small advances.

In fact, there hasn’t been much good news from the screen portion of the franchise in recent years. Pine’s Star Trek co-star Yelchin died in an accident in 2016. Star Trek 3 grossed just $345 million on its $185 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo. “Why don’t we just try to please our devoted fans and make films for a good price? When is Star Trek 4 in cinemas?

Whether the next Star Trek can provide a satisfactory answer to his question is unclear. Part 4 was last announced for December 2023, then canceled again. We calculate at the earliest end of 2024 with a theatrical release.
