Cameras, microphones, GPS and on-board computers: the latest cars are full of electronic components connected to the Internet from China. On each journey, thousands of data are collected. So many elements that can be used to spy on or destabilize an enemy. This is what Washington wants to avoid at all costs. The risk mainly concerns autonomous driving vehicles, legal in the UNITED STATES.

The restrictions will begin in 2027 for software and in 2029 for terminals. The US government has not yet specified which manufacturers will be affected. But American automobile lobbies have already expressed their concern. The deadline seems too short to find alternatives to Chinese technologies.

A race against time

This is precisely the goal of the Biden administration: to legislate now, before supply chains depend on China. The Chinese ambassador to the United States has strongly denounced this proposal. Beijing accuses the Americans of hiding behind national security to engage in protectionism. Washington has already imposed a 100% surcharge on Chinese electric vehiclesA measure which should come into force on September 27.

Trade tensions over electric vehicles are increasing between the United States and China. The World Trade Organization agreed on September 23 to settle a trade dispute between China and the United States over American subsidies granted by the Biden administration’s green plan to the electric vehicle sector.
