Chinese Social Media Against LGBTQ Activism

In Beijing, China, live the young gay couple Xie Jun and Huang Yubo. Working in social media on the Chinese equivalent of TikTok – Douyin, Wei has created a successful presence on the popular platform.

Recently, one of his posts was recently taken down due to violation of the platform’s core values. As the number of platforms where young LGBTQ people can come into contact increases, so does censorship.

– There are less and less funds available for activist groups. Ways to raise funds are being restricted and more of them are becoming illegal all the time, says activist Wei Jiangang, who no longer lives in the country.
