This festival marks the transition from one season to another, and therefore the end of winter. At the beginning, it was even an agricultural festival, which was used by the peasants for their harvests. Why does the Chinese New Year change date every year?
The date of Chinese New Year varies every year as it is calculated according to the Chinese lunar calendar. The first day of the year must be on the second new moon after the winter solstice, before the lunar phase of vernal equinox. In general, it falls between January 20 and February 21. For 2024, the Chinese New Year will take place on Saturday February 10, 2024 and it will be the year of the Dragon, under the element of Wood.
Why does the Chinese New Year extend over 15 days?
According to tradition, the Chinese New Year lasts an average of fifteen days, until the first full moon of the year which falls on the day of the lantern festival. During this time, many festivities are organized in honor of the deities but also to get rid of the negative things suffered during the past year, in order to start a new year balanced, lucky or even providential.
What is the Lantern Festival?
The Lantern Festival, which also bears the name “Little New Year”, closes the Chinese New Year festivities. It takes place on Sunday February 5, 2023. During this festival, the Chinese meet with family or friends to eat yuanxiao, stuffed rice balls, served in a soup whose rounded shape symbolizes the reunited family. In the evening, they go out into the street with lanterns in their hands to watch the moon, admire the fireworks, and play riddles written on the lanterns. During the day, various dances and walks on stilts are also organized. This custom dates back to the time of Emperor Qin Shihuang, who unified China around 2 centuries BC. Lantern riddles appeared later during the Song Dynasty (960-1279).

What is the Chinese New Year meal, what do we eat?
