China zoo rejects accusations: Our bears are real

A bear at a zoo in China has raised questions on social media.
Is it real – or is it just a person in a hideous disguise?
“You don’t seem to understand me very well…”, writes the zoo from the Malay bear Angela’s perspective.

A clip of an endangered Malayan bear at Hangzhou Zoo in eastern China is spreading like wildfire on social media.

The reason? It is suspected to be fake.

Standing on its hind legs with its paws placed on the edge of the enclosure, peering out at the visitors, its authenticity is questioned. Many people comment that it looks like the bear has an “ill-fitting bear suit”.

Now the zoo is assuring its visitors that their bears are in fact real.

“Some people think I stand just like them… but you don’t seem to understand me very well,” writes the zoo in a post from Angela the bear’s perspective.

The Malayan bear is an endangered species originating in Southeast Asia. The bear is the world’s smallest and usually grows to the size of a larger dog. On its hind legs, it reaches about 1.3 meters in height, which is about half the height of a grizzly bear.
