Several of China’s major cities are easing somewhat the strict covid rules that have sparked unusually large protests. From the authorities in Beijing, somewhat changing tones are heard.
Sun Chunlan, deputy prime minister in China’s State Council with the highest responsibility for infection prevention work, says that things have started to look more manageable and that it is a “new situation” that means “new tasks”.
In Beijing, the approach to covid-testing all residents daily will be scaled back, and self-isolation in case of infection is reportedly also being considered.
