China is canceling a planned visit by EU foreign affairs chief Josep Borrell that was supposed to take place early next week. The announcement comes at a time of many contradictions between the EU and China, including on trade, human rights and the war in Ukraine.
During his visit, Josep Borrell would have held talks with Chinese Foreign Minister Qin Gang and other high-ranking Chinese representatives, according to a statement on Sunday. But on Wednesday comes the announcement that the visit will not take place.
“Unfortunately, we have been informed by our Chinese counterparts that the planned dates next week are no longer possible and we must now look for alternatives,” writes EU spokesperson Nabila Massrali in a written statement.
“It is up to China to communicate the reasons,” she writes.
