China and the US resume military contact

– We are back to direct, open and clear communication, says US President Joe Biden in a press conference after the four-long meeting with China’s Xi Jinping on the night of Thursday.

The countries have gradually restored communications after Beijing severed ties in August 2022 when then-Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taiwan.

The leaders also agreed to stem the flow of the drug fentanyl and to work closely together on artificial intelligence.

– It will save lives and I appreciate President Xi for his efforts on this issue, Biden said regarding the fentanyl issue.

The US president also expressed that the talks with Xi were “some of the most constructive and productive discussions” they have ever had.

“Don’t stir up trouble”

In addition to discussing topics on which the countries can cooperate, Xi Jinping urged the United States not to suppress or stifle China in political terms.

“Both sides should have an understanding of each other’s principles and conclusions, not create or stir up trouble or overstep boundaries, but instead have more dialogue and deal with differences and incidents in a calm manner,” Xi said, according to the state-run New China News Agency.
