Panda son Fan Xing, meanwhile, is startled by the ice bath that has been placed in the enclosure. A bit too fresh perhaps, a visitor laughs from behind the glass. But Fan Xing soon gets used to it, caretaker Brenda points out. It is extra busy in their kitchens, because of the kilos of ice creams, ice shavings and drinking troughs that have to be produced. “From the gorillas to the orangutans: they are all sitting on the ice with these tropical temperatures. It’s actually quite simple: we fill a cup or a bucket with water and their favorite snack, and then freeze it. In the case of the pandas, the carrot and pear ice cream on a bamboo stick.”
