How close Prince Andrew and Jeffrey Epstein where is not known. But according to Town & Country Magazine Prince Andrew is said to have said that the two met for the first time in 1999. They were introduced to each other by Ghislaine Maxwell.
“I met him through his girlfriend in 1999 and I’ve known her since she was studying at a university in the UK and it would be, to some extent, an exaggeration to say that we were sort of close friends. I mean we were friends because of other people and I had many opportunities to go to the US but I didn’t have much time with her,” Andrew is said to have said during an interview with BBC Newsnight.
However, Town & Country Magazine states that Prince Andrew’s explanation regarding the relationship with both Epstein and Maxwell should not be completely true.
According to the magazine, Andrew’s private secretary, Alastair Watsonnoted differently. He believes that Andrew should have told that he knew Epstein “since they were introduced to each other in the early 1990s”.

On November 21, 2019, during the metoo movement, a world news broke: the American financier Jeffrey Epstein was arrested after a federal indictment of sex trafficking with minors was drawn up against him.
Epstein was accused of offering underage girls payment in exchange for sexual intercourse with both Epstein and people in his circle. One of those singled out was Prince Andrew.
A woman by name Virginia Giuffre has claimed that when she was only 17 years old, Epstein allegedly paid her $15,000 to have sex with Prince Andrew.
“Yes, I got $15,000. I don’t know what that equates to in pounds. I received the money in US dollars,” she is said to have said in questioning, which Aftonbladet reproduced.
The incident with Giuffre allegedly took place in 2001 but Prince Andrew has always denied that he was involved.
In 2022, the two parties reached a settlement which resulted in Giuffre being paid £12m and the prosecution and allegations of sexual abuse dropped.
According to The evening paper the assaults are said to have occurred on three separate occasions, one of which was in a bathtub with Ghislaine Maxwell, who was Epstein’s partner for a period and later also convicted of sexual offenses in association with Epstein.
In 2020, Maxwell was sentenced by a federal court to 20 years in prison. Epstein died in custody in 2019.
In 2019, Prince Andrew announced that he would retire from all public engagements, which SVT News reported on then.

In 2019, Andrew was interviewed by the BBC where he had to respond to rumors that he paid to have sex with minors.
The BBC journalist says during the interview that a woman said that she and Andrew danced and that he sweated a lot.
The prince then replies that he could not have sweated as at the time of the alleged sex purchase of minors he would have suffered from an illness that did not enable him to sweat. This is said to have been caused by him receiving an overdose of adrenaline when he was fired upon during the Falklands War.
The statement later came to be known as the “Sweat Defense”, something SVT News also written about.

The Swedish Daily stated in September 2024 that Prince Andrew has now renounced all royal duties and retired to Windsor, where he and ex-wife Sarah Ferguson live together in the Royal Lodge mansion.
