Children in Japan have the opportunity to experience One Piece as a school subject

Some elementary school students in Japan are extremely lucky because they are able to experience One Piece as part of their school curriculum. The program teaches them to explore their own dreams and express them artistically.

What does an hour like this look like? The focus of the lesson is for children to recognize what their own dreams are and that they should hold on to them.

First, the teacher gives an overview of the story of the pirate adventure. The focus is on the characters’ dreams and how they pursue them to the end. The pirate flags of the individual characters are presented as a symbol for their dreams.

Afterwards, the students are divided into groups and have to think about their own dreams. The dreams can be anchored in different areas of life, such as:

  • personal interests
  • Career aspirations
  • Future goals
  • These dreams are written down and discussed with the other students. This helps to identify the strengths of each student. At the end, the children are allowed to paint their own Jolly Roger, which is supposed to symbolize their dream.

The ships in One Piece also symbolize the dreams of the individual pirates. You can find the five coolest ships in the following video from MeinMMO:

One Piece visits elementary schools in Japan

Why is One Piece incorporated into school curriculum? Manga publisher Shueisha, which is responsible for publishing the One Piece manga, organized the program. It is a nationwide initiative that aims to combine vocational training and cultural appreciation.

Since its launch last year, 47 schools have already been visited. On June 28, 2024, the special lesson inspired by One Piece was held at Shirahata Elementary School in the city of Kosa.

Will the campaign also be available in Germany? So far, there are no plans for Shueisha to bring this initiative to Germany. This campaign will probably only be available in Japan, as the manga publisher has its roots there.

One Piece is now enjoying great success not only in Japan, but worldwide. The franchise is so popular that mangaka Eiichiro Oda is now working on a live-action adaptation. We now also know who will be taking on the new roles in season 2: The live-action series for One Piece features 3 more new actors – one of whom we know from Game of Thrones
