Children had to wait 16 months for a cancer diagnosis

The child had developed psychiatric and neurological symptoms for a long time and was referred to child and adolescent psychiatry. After that, the child was repeatedly referred to the children’s and youth clinic at Halland Hospital, but the investigations showed no physical causes.

Further examinations were carried out when the symptoms worsened, and they showed changes in the brain. Investigations at Queen Silvia’s Children’s Hospital then showed an unusual form of encephalitis and later cancer of the lymphatic system.

After proper diagnosis and treatment, the neurological and psychiatric symptoms have regressed.

The incident analysis points to shortcomings in the care and the incident has been reported to the Swedish Care Inspectorate (Ivo).
