Three children aged 12, 13 and 14 have died in Venezuela after completing a challenge on Tiktok. The challenge included inhaling, ingesting and dispersing “dangerous mixtures” of chemicals, President Nicolas Maduro said.
Now Venezuela’s Supreme Court sentences Tiktok to pay 10 million dollars, which corresponds to approximately 110 million kroner. This is because the company fails in the rapid checks of content on the platform, reports Bloomberg.
According to the judgment, Tiktok must also open an office in the country to ensure that the content on the platform complies with the laws.
That’s where the money should go
The money will go to a fund to compensate the victims, writes the news agency.
– With the fine money, the Venezuelan state will create a fund for the victims of Tiktok, which will compensate for psychological, emotional and physical damage suffered by the victims, says judge Tania D’amelio according to Reuters.
Lawyer Erika Arteaga, 45, believes that Venezuela will ban the platform in the country.
– Yes, probably. Just like they did with Twitter. They will probably block it. Another measure in their favor, she says.
The cleaner Miriam Bravo, 43, is on the same track.
– It is allowed in other countries, but in Venezuela it will be banned in the end, she says.
