Child died after home birth – Ivo: “Grossly incompetent”

A midwife from Västergötland risks losing her license after 20 years, reports the news agency Siren.
The Inspectorate for Care and Care, Ivo, began investigating her after a home birth that ended in the baby’s death.

In January 2021, an ambulance was called to an address in Västra Götaland.

A woman had chosen to give birth to her first child at home, and the audited nurse had been hired as a midwife.

After the woman had contractions all night, the midwife called the hospital early in the morning and said there was feces in the amniotic fluid.

The child later died in hospital, and doctors judged that he probably would have been fine if they had come in earlier.

The midwife receives harsh criticism from Ivo. She did not check the laborer’s blood pressure and did not properly monitor the fetus. She also did not accompany the woman to the hospital.

It also appears in Ivo’s review that the woman does not have sufficient experience to work with home births. The midwife herself says that she worked with births for twenty years, but Ivo only finds evidence that she worked in childbirth for ten months in the mid-1980s.

Ivo writes that the midwife was “grossly incompetent”.

The decision on her identification must be made by the Health and Medical Service’s responsibility board (HSAN).
