Juventus’ Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini announced on Monday his retirement from the Italian national team after the match against Argentina in the 2022 Conmebol-UEFA Champions Cup final, which will be played at Wembley on June 1.
“If I am well I will play and say goodbye to the national team at Wembley, where I certainly lived the peak of my national career and perhaps my career in general (Euro 2020), that victory was something unique. I would like to say goodbye to the ‘azzurra’ shirt with a celebration match like that”, he told DAZN at the end of the Serie A victory against Sassuolo (1-2).
The centre-back, however, left the door open to continue his career as a footballer, which points to a future in the MLS: “With the national team, I’m sure he’ll be the last. Let’s let those who are good play,” he said with a laugh. “Without a doubt, he will be the last in the selection,” he said.
