Chelsea are being investigated for financial irregularities

Last year, following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Russian oligarch Roman Abramovich was forced to sell Premier League club Chelsea. By then he had owned the club for 19 years.

Now British media reports that Chelsea’s new owners, a consortium led by American businessman Todd Boehly, have reported their own club, including to the Premier League, for possible financial violations.

The investigation will cover a number of financial transactions between 2012 and 2019 that were discovered during the takeover process of the club last year. Payments to so-called letterbox companies and a payment to a player’s family are also to be included in the investigation, writes The Times.

Chelsea have yet to be charged with any offence, but if found guilty they could face stiff fines and points deductions.

In July, Chelsea were fined for breaching Uefa’s Financial Fair Play rules, violations that also allegedly occurred under Abramovich’s leadership.
