Electric cars are generally cheap to operate, mainly because electricity is generally cheaper than petrol or diesel.

The only problem is that new electric cars are expensive, and when you factor in the reduction in value, the economic argument for driving an electric vehicle falls away.

More specifically, they have looked at which electric cars have received the highest rating on a 100-point scale in the “total economy” category.

The winner in the compilation, with 90.9 out of 100 points, is the Volkswagen e-Up!

The car only offers a range of around 10 miles, but in return, examples from 2014 can be found used for under SEK 100,000. If you spend around SEK 160,000 on the updated version, you get a range of around 26 miles.

Including capital cost, tax, insurance, service, tires, depreciation, repair fund and electricity, Mestmotor calculates that the car only costs SEK 38 per mile to own.

2. Kia Soul EV

Car number two on the list is the first Kia Soul EV, which can be found used for around SEK 120,000 with the small battery of 27 kWh. The car gets 89.1 points from the owners.

3. MG Marvel R

Third place is filled by a significantly more modern wagon in the form of the MG Marvel R from 2021, with 89 points. The Performance version can be found for around SEK 350,000 used.

In fourth place we find the Hyundai Kona Electric, with a rating of 88.3 points. For under SEK 200,000, you can find examples from 2019.

5. Kia e-Niro

Fifth place is taken by the Kia e-Niro, which is a sibling of the Hyundai Kona Electric. There are a lot of cars on the market, at prices starting at SEK 320,000. The rating is 88.1 points.

6. Renault Zoe

Another electric car that is plentiful on the used market is the Renault Zoe, which receives a rating of 88 points. Prices start at around SEK 70,000. However, it is important to watch out for cars where the battery is rented from the manufacturer, which means that you have to pay rent for this.

In seventh place, with 87.7 points, we find the MG 4, which is a highly modern feature on the list. Examples from 2022 can be found used for around SEK 250,000.

8. Mazda MX-30

The Mazda MX-30 is an electric car with a high quality feel, but a short range. 87.1 points are enough for eighth place, and prices for a 2021 model start at around SEK 150,000. Later model years are available in the MX-30 R-EV version, with a Wankel engine as a range extender.

9. BMW i3

In ninth place we find the BMW i3, with compact dimensions and body in carbon fiber. 86.1 points are given to the overall economy by the owners, and prices start at SEK 110,000.

The only real family car on the list is the Skoda Enyaq, which rounds out the top 10 with a score of 85.4 points. Prices for the 2021 model start at SEK 300,000.
