Clinton Willder, 28, was charged with attempted murder along with arson with disregard for human life and break and entering after a fire at a Park Street residence in Chatham around 8 am March 10.

Ontario Court of Justice staff said Willder entered a guilty plea on the attempted murder charge on Friday, but no pleas were entered on the arson or break and entering charges.

Willder, who is in custody, returns to court Feb. 20 for a sentencing hearing.

Emergency crews were called to a fire on Park Street and learned a male occupant was still in the building, Chatham-Kent police said at the time.

“(The tenant) was found unconscious with visible injuries unrelated to the fire,” police said. “The man was immediately transported to the hospital for medical attention, where it was determined that the injuries were life-threatening.”

Willder was arrested on March 11.
