Chatham man faces child porn charges: police

A Chatham resident faces multiple charges after a child pornography investigation, Chatham-Kent police say.

Members of the force’s internet child exploitation unit with a warrant conducted a search Thursday, police said.

A Chatham man, 46, faces two counts each of possessing, accessing and making child porn available, police said. At a bail hearing, he was remanded into custody at the Southwest Regional Detention Center pending his next court appearance.

Chatham-Kent police is a member of the Provincial Strategy to Protect Children from Sexual Abuse and Exploitation on the Internet and conducts investigations in partnership with law enforcement agencies in Ontario and around the world.

There are resources available through the Center for Addiction and Mental Health for those who have a sexual interest in children.

The new Talking for Change program is the first of its kind in Canada and provides national and all-ages help for those concerned about their risk to use child sexual exploitation material or offend sexually against a child, police said.

The public can report suspicious internet activities relating to child exploitation to Chatham-Kent police or online at www.cybertip.ca. Internet safety tips for parents, children and internet users are available at ckpolice.com and the Cybertip website.

Man charged after weapons call

A man faces charges after a weapons call at a Chatham store, Chatham-Kent police say.

Officers called to a store on St. Clair Street near McNaughton Avenue, Thursday learned a trespasser pulled a knife and pointed it in a threatening manner at two staffers after being confronted by an employee, said police, who arrested a suspect outside.

A Chatham-Kent man, 37, faces two counts each of assault with a weapon, assault, and failing to comply with a probation order, and a single count of possessing a weapon for a dangerous purpose, police said. he was held pending a bail hearing.
