Chatham man charged with first degree murder after body discovered

A 42-year-old Chatham man is facing a first-degree murder charge after Chatham-Kent police responded to check on the well-being of a woman just before 12 p.m. Monday.

A 42-year-old Chatham man has been charged with first-degree murder after Chatham-Kent police discovered a body Monday during a well-being check.

When officers arrived at the home on Bedford Street in Chatham at noon on Monday, they found a dead 44-year-old woman, police said.

Police did not provide any details about a cause of death or the relationship between the suspect and the woman.

The suspect is being held in custody pending a bail hearing, police added.

The only police presence that could be seen on Bedford Street late Tuesday afternoon was a police cruiser parked among other vehicles in the parking lot of an apartment building located on the street.

Neighboring residents were unaware of the discovery of a body and the subsequent arrest, saying they were surprised to hear that someone had been charged with murder.

To protect the integrity of their investigation, police said they would be releasing no further information at this time.

Anyone with information is asked to contact Const. Paul Brophy at 519-436-6600 ext. 619 or [email protected].
