In May, council asked staff to draft a bylaw to permit keeping hens on rural and village residential-zoned properties.

The draft is ready, the municipality said in a release Thursday. Before council considers it, the public will have two chances to weigh in:

An online Let’s Talk Chatham-Kent page and survey will be available until Sept. 19 at letstalkchatham-kent.ca/backyard-chickens-by-law

An in-person public engagement session Sept. 19 at 6 pm at Dresden’s Ken Houston Memorial and Agricultural Center, which will be live-streamed on the municipality’s Facebook page and YouTube channel.

Feedback received will go to council with the draft bylaw sometime this fall.

No deputations will be received at that council meeting, since there will have been at least one public meeting held on the issue.

Previously, nearly 5,000 people completed an online survey last year, with 68 per cent in favor of backyard chickens. Forty-five per cent of participants said they’re interested in having chickens themselves.

Eighty per cent of the respondents were from urban areas, 20 per cent from rural areas.
