Howes, a father of three, who recently moved to St. Thomas from McKay’s Corners, is a long-time supporter of the fundraiser.

He admitted having few words when he heard that he won.

“I grew up in Chatham-Kent and just moved to St. Thomas last year for work, so I’ve always bought tickets for these 50/50s as a way to support this hospital that’s been so good to me and to my family, ” Howes said in a release Friday.

“I never really thought that there was a chance that I would actually win, so when I got the call, I was definitely speechless. I’m still having a hard time believing that this is real.”

Howes purchased a total of 1,500 numbers, including the lucky number. While he and his wife were focused on preparing for their son’s birthday, he plans to buy a new smoker, as well as finish his pilot’s license, with his winnings.

The fundraiser collected a grand total of $149,380, with proceeds to support the areas of greatest need at the hospital.

“We are so grateful for your support in helping make this 50/50 an overwhelming success,” the foundation stated in the release.

“You are helping fund the purchase of life-saving equipment, facility upgrades and program innovation at our hospital sites in Chatham and Wallaceburg, and making a real difference for local patients.”

The next 50/50 draw is planned for this summer, with further details to come.
