Chatham-Kent fire department uses Hydro One grant for mobile command unit

With assistance from a Hydro One grant, the Chatham-Kent fire department has purchased a new mobile command unit for use at emergency scenes.

The $25,000 grant was part of the 2023 intake for the Energizing Life community fund, which is geared to Indigenous communities, charitable organizations and municipalities across Ontario, whose work promotes physical, psychological and emotional well-being.

Last year, 25 recipients providing critical local services were selected to receive funding. Chatham-Kent fire put its grant toward the mobile command unit that will provide emergency communications and support to better control critical situations.

“Thanks to the Hydro One Energizing Life community fund, we’ve been able to develop a new mobile command unit and have already put it to use while responding to emergencies in the community,” Chief Chris Case said in a release.

“The command unit allows our first responders to get rapid access to equipment and information, as well as on-site rehabilitation for firefighters to receive medical attention, if needed. We are extremely grateful to Hydro One for helping us respond to emergencies as quickly and safely as possible.”

During the past three years, grant have gone to various community programs, such as increased access to mental health support for farmers, city beautification through murals and peer-led education to fight homophobia and transphobia.

For this year’s grant intake, Hydro One will continue to accept applications until Jan. 31 deadline.
