“A purchase of these properties by the municipality is currently in process, subject to final council consideration and voting, with an anticipated purchase and demolition occurring later this spring,” officials said.

While this work proceeds, municipal administration has hired a company to provide 24-hour security for the site.

These security personnel will be present in the area while the matter is investigated and next steps in the property purchases are undertaken, officials added.

The explosion on Aug. 26, 2021 was linked to highly toxic hydrogen sulphide gas seeing up through the ground.

It destroyed two buildings and damaged several others in the community, which is located about 45 kilometers southwest of Chatham. A total of 20 people were injured.

Last month, Chatham-Kent council approved spending $3.5 million to buy several properties in the evacuation zone. This was funded by a $3-million provincial grant, with the remainder coming from a strategic reserve.

In the meantime, the municipality continues negotiating to buy remaining properties.
