For the ninth year, a Chatham family hopes to scare away hunger in the community, while perhaps making a few visitors jump at the same time.

The Long family, who live at 19 Ottawa Dr., will open their haunted house later this month to anyone who dares to enter.

The event on Oct. 28, from 4-6 pm, will be geared to smaller children with no jump scares, but that will change for the 6-8 pm time slot, with the same plans for Halloween the following Tuesday.
Non-perishable food items or monetary donations are requested, with Outreach for Hunger providing charitable receipts for any monetary donation of $10 or more.
“We’ve changed it up a bit with the layout of the house,” Chris Long said. “We’re trying to freshen it up this year.”
Last year, more than 800 people came out. Long said it worked out well having a separate time for young kids and the older visitors in the neighborhood.
“They can still come through and take a look at the decorations and such,” he said.
His wife, Michelle, said it only made sense to combine their passion for the holiday with helping those in need.
“Our family loves Halloween. So, building a yearly haunted house was a great opportunity to share our spirit with the community,” she said.
“Asking for non-perishable or monetary donations for our local Outreach for Hunger is a great way for us all to give back. It’s a win-win.”
