Charged the car at the square – cost 105,000 kroner

Charged the car at the square cost 105000 kroner

On Wednesday got Göran Björstad a surprise when he charged his Kia plug-in hybrid in the square in Borgholm on Öland, reports The Express.

While he was at the hairdresser, he left the car to charge for around an hour and a quarter, but when it was time to finish charging he was met with an error message.

Charging for SEK 105,000

The error message was that the payment for the recharge had not gone through, and the reason quickly became apparent.

The cost of charging was almost SEK 105,000. SEK 104,752.5, to be more specific.

Consumption as a villa

The reason for the sky-high amount was that, according to the app, Göran had charged a whopping 20,950.50 kWh in just over an hour.

By comparison, the battery on the largest plug-in hybrid that Kia makes, the Sorrento PHEV, is only 13.8 kWh. It will therefore be difficult to load more than this into the car.

Göran tells Expressen that a full charge at home usually ends up at around 10 kWh.

That he would have charged over 20,000 kWh, which according to Expressen is roughly what an average villa consumes for a whole year, is therefore not very likely.

Happens “from time to time”

After calling Eways, who are operators of the charging posts in the square in Borgholm, Göran was able to finish the charging. He was also promised that the amount would not be deducted from his card.

The explanation for the sky-high bill for charging is due, according to Eway’s technical manager Lars Eliason, to the fact that it was not the consumption from Göran’s charging that was reported into the app, but the charging post’s meter reading.

“It can happen if there is a communication break between the start of charging and the end of charging or if one of the values is corrupt,” he writes in an email to Expressen.

Errors of this type occur, according to Eliasson, from time to time. However, he says that there are locks that prevent the money from being withdrawn from the customer’s account.
