Crisis-stricken Haiti is expected to appoint a new prime minister as the incumbent leader is fired by the country’s transitional council.
The new leader will be the third acting prime minister since February this year.
Haiti’s Transitional Council is set to fire incumbent Acting Prime Minister Garry Conille by decree, replacing him with businessman and politician Alix Didier Fils-Aimé. Thus, the chaotic political carousel continues in the country torn by violence, crisis and gang crime.
The official announcement is expected on Monday, but the decision was leaked late on Sunday.
Haiti’s Transitional Council was established in April after the former prime minister was ousted following, among other things, pressure from the United States. By then, Haiti had descended into complete chaos with the real power resting with armed, criminal groups in large parts of the Caribbean nation.
The transitional council was also supposed to pave the way for a new parliament, but several of the council’s members have in turn been accused of corruption.
Garry Conille took office in June and then replaced Michel Boisvert, who was acting prime minister for just over three months.
Conille has a past as prime minister for a year in Haiti in 2011. He also has a past in UN operations in several vulnerable countries, including Haiti.
