During yesterday, several chimpanzees managed to escape from the monkey house inside Furuviksparken outside Gävle. The exact sequence of events is still unclear on Thursday, but three have been shot dead and a fourth has been injured.
– This is an incredibly serious and tragic situation for everyone involved, says Annika Troselius, information manager at Parks and Resorts, which runs the facility.
According to Troselius, four chimpanzees are inside the monkey house itself, but they are not locked in their enclosures. And since the chimpanzees are classified as high-risk animals, which can attack humans, it is difficult to get a good overview of the situation.
– We haven’t been able to update ourselves on the damage situation, because we still haven’t been able to get into the house for security reasons, she says.
