Change in the Swedish calendar

Change in the Swedish calendar

From 2025, even more people will be able to celebrate name day. The name length committee has decided to include six new names in the Swedish calendar and thus six new name days are added.

News24 have talked to Katharina Leibringmember of the Name Length Committee, about why these particular names will be added to the calendar.

– The committee had received many name suggestions from the public, each of which was discussed, and these names were selected because they are partly or have been quite popular as baby names in recent decades and partly are relatively common today, Leibring reasons, and adds:

– We only make minor additions every few years. The idea is that this name length should be stable. We are no longer removing any names.

New name days in the calendar – here are all the names

The names added to the Swedish calendar are as follows:

  • Cassandra – 20/10
  • Eira – 24/1
  • Flora – 29/10
  • Mio – 5/6
  • Vilgot – 30/7
  • Zacharias – 19/12
  • Leibring explains that the reason why the names ended up on the exact dates they ended up on depends on which names are already there earlier in the day.

    – The names that are taken in must have some type of connection, linguistic or cultural in a broad sense, with the name with which it may share a day. Therefore, it is also required that there must be “free” days, i.e. days with only one name, where the new names fit in according to the criteria just mentioned.

For example, the name Zackarias is found in the Bible and has Hebrew origins, as does the name Isaac, which also has its day on December 19. The name Flora gets to share the day with Viola as both are Latin and are connected with flowers.

The new name days are delayed – in the physical calendars 2027

However, it will be a long time before the names will appear in the physical calendars. Until 2027, those who want to celebrate the new name days will have to wait.

    – It depends on the publishers’ long production times, Leibring explains to Nyheter24.
