The Disney+ platform and similar digital streaming platforms are the future of the industry, according to Disney president Bob Chapek, and cinema may be a thing of the past.
The Disney+ platform is the future of the “movie” industry, according to Disney president Bob Chapek. Chapek thinks that platforms such as Disney+, Netflix, and HBO will become the preferred media platforms in the post-pandemic world, and that the film industry may not be as demanding for cinemas as it used to be. According to Chapek, filmmakers have left behind the “pre-pandemic” model of film release.
Disney+ platform will be the new focus of movie publishers
Chapek says that during the pandemic, Disney has released important productions (such as Obi-Wan or Loki series) on the online platform, and this will be the new fashion. Disney will not give up on cinema, but will plan its most important stories according to Disney+;
“I’m sure it will. Our movie Enkanto: The Magical World had averaged out in theaters in the past, but once we added it to Disney+, it hit #1. I don’t need to explain how popular the movie was after that.”
Although Chapek states that cinema is still very important when considering blockbuster movies, he emphasizes that new brands may be born on digital broadcasting platforms instead of cinema:
“It doesn’t mean we won’t be releasing giant Marvel movies, Start Wars movies, or Avatar. Because cinema is still a great opportunity to experience movies. But that doesn’t mean all of our productions have to be screened in theaters.”
