Celtic band kicks off return of St Andrews concert series

St. Andrew’s United Church will resume its Saturdays at 7 concert series March 26 with a performance from a Hamilton band rooted in Celtic traditions.

Steel City Rovers will perform at 7 pm to kick off the ninth season of the series at the church. According to a news release, the band’s music is a “unique composite of traditional Celtic music and North American styles including bluegrass, folk and roots.”

“Their original works touch on issues of love, loss, celebration and heritage and they also breathe life into newly discovered instrumental melodies from centuries ago,” the release said. “Their sophisticated arrangements are inviting for the most casual listener but are rewarding for those who are well versed in the nuances of musical complexity.”

The band uses replicas of historical instruments which aren’t in common use today, the release said. They have headlined festivals, performed internationally with symphonies and conducted educational workshops.

The concert will be open to both in-person and virtual audiences. Tickets are not required for those attending in person and masks are optional. The live stream will be found at www.facebook.com/standrews/live.

The church suggests a $15 donation from those viewing the performance either virtually or live.

The Saturdays at 7 season will also feature the Ottawa Guitar Trio (April 23), Simply Sondheim (May 14) and A Time to Celebrate (June 11).
