Have you recently divorced and want to mark the occasion? Why not consider a celebration in this case? This “divorce party”, very popular across the Atlantic, has multiple advantages. Our psychologist will enlighten you.

In France and elsewhere in the world, an astonishing phenomenon has emerged: “divorce parties”. Celebrations in small groups or with great fanfare, which mark the start of a new life. But is it a good way to turn the page? Does partying really help you mourn your relationship? Answers.

    Overcoming sadness through celebration

Although the phenomenon is less democratized in France than in the United States – where divorce has become a lucrative business – it is nevertheless being emulated by newly divorced French people. This is the case of Marianne, interviewed by our colleagues from HuffPost.

My divorce was finalized in July 2019, and I celebrated it that same evening”remembers Marianne, who experienced a difficult separation. “Even though I had been separated for a year and a half when we signed, I felt that it was not a trivial step. I wanted to take it like a marriage, surrounded by the people I ‘love”confides the 39-year-old lawyer.

For this evening, certain wedding codes were adopted, not without lightness.

“I wore a white dress, I treated myself to a piece of jewelry and I ordered a cake with figurines of the bride and groom, except that the husband had his head cut off”, she remembers. The party is happy and the guests have a good time, which allows the young woman to “overcome sadness and grief” of his past relationship.

A celebration which therefore not only allows you to change your mind, but also to turn the page by assuming this new position in society (no, divorce is not a failure!).

    A way to assert yourself

No offense to traditional people, divorce parties allow you to take ownership of your divorce (I celebrate it instead of suffering it), to take responsibility for it and even to announce it to as many people as possible. Through this celebration, shame or regret no longer predominates.

A way to celebrate your separation, which Amélie Boukhobza validates.

Celebrate your divorce, why not? If it goes well and everyone agrees… It’s an opportunity to mark the end of a chapter so why not have a party to symbolize the start of a new stage of life. This celebration can also be therapeutic for some, especially if you are supported by friends. It is also a way of asserting yourself to celebrate your divorce… By supporting your independence and regaining confidence in life following an often not very fun period“, recognizes the clinical psychologist.
