CBD to improve mood

Could CBD be responsible for an improvement in mood? This is what an American study tends to show, which involved 3,000 participants. But despite encouraging results – 71% of them showed an improvement in their mood – caution is still in order.

In France, the consumption and sale of CBD continue to cause a lot of ink to flow. On December 31, 2021, a decree published in the official journal, authorizes “the cultivation, import, export and industrial and commercial use”. However, flowers and leaves are prohibited. But what are the effects of cannabidiol, this “wellness” product known to help regulate mood?

    Encouraging results

According to the first results of a study conducted by the American start-up Radicle Science, CBD-based products improve mood in 71% of participants. Anxiety improved in 63% of volunteers, while sleep quality was significantly impacted for 6% of them. Finally, nearly one in two people (47%) noted an improvement in pain. The effects appeared between one and four hours after taking the product for 61% of patients.

To obtain these results, the researchers interviewed more than 3,000 volunteers over a period of four weeks. Note that this study called ACES, for Advancing CBD Education and Science is funded by thirteen CBD brands. It aims to measure the effects of cannabidiol-based products sold on the American market. This is the largest study ever conducted on CBD products.

    Scientific validation planned for 2022

To carry out their research, while limiting conflicts of interest, the authors of the study insist on the applied methodology. For example, part of the trials were designed double-blind. “208 participants took one of 13 CBD products, available commercially or over the counter, while a group of 298, who received only the placebo, served as a control group”, can we read in the study. Companies and brands did not know who received the active products. Final publication is scheduled for early 2022. It will then be submitted for scientific validation.

A study conducted in France also

An experiment on the medical applications of cannabis was launched by the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM) in 2021. Less strict than a clinical trial, this study will test five possible combinations for two years of CBD and THC in different indications, pain first, whether associated with cancer or multiple sclerosis.

“The experiment involves 3,000 patients treated and followed for at least 6 months, says Nathalie Richard. Cannabis is not the first line of treatment, it is offered to patients who have failed other treatments or if they cannot tolerate them” told us Nathalie Richard, director of cannabis experimentation for medical use at the National Agency for the Safety of Medicines and Health Products (ANSM).
