Santa Fe District Attorney Mary Carmack-Altwies told Vanity Fair magazine that she watched Alec Baldwin’s interview with ABC in December, noting the actor’s assertion that he didn’t pull the trigger.

In the interview, Baldwin insisted that the trigger was never pulled. “I didn’t pull the trigger. I never point a gun at anyone and pull the trigger.” he said.
Carmack-Altwies launched an unofficial investigation of its own to test Baldwin’s claims that the gun had only cocked it before firing the bullet that hit Hutchins in the chest and injured the film’s director, Joel Souza.

Carmack-Altwies, who said he didn’t know much about guns, especially guns from the 1850s, asked one of the attendants to bring the old-style gun to his office and test whether a mechanical failure had caused the gun to explode. Testing revealed that the cocking of the gun could cause the bullet to fire.
Although Baldwin claimed he didn’t pull the trigger, the script supervisor for “Rust” filed a lawsuit in November, alleging that Baldwin had “intentionally” fired the gun at Hutchins.
